Imaginary Beasts

VIEW PROJECT DETAILS

This project is inspired by the Quebecois artist, Alfred Pellan, the author of several paintings, sculptures and masks. Students will create their own little multicolored creature with colourful and light modelling clay. Each student will make a unique and imaginary work while learning art elements like texture, shape, proportion and how to play with mixes of colour!

Material: Toothpicks and coloured air dry modelling clay.

Pointillism Garden

VIEW PROJECT DETAILS

Students will create a landscape while experimenting with mixes of colour in the pointillist style developed by two French artists, Georges Seurat and Paul Signac. Students will explore the use of oil pastels as well as texture, shape, perspective, the use of light, colour gradients and complementary colours. Pointillist paintings are realistic, and you can notice the painted image by standing away!


Material: White card stock paper, oil pastels, paper towel.

Winter Evening

VIEW PROJECT DETAILS

Students will create their own winter time landscape by drawing little houses in the magical style of the French-Canadian artist Jean-Philippe Dallaire. They will learn to use oil pastels and art concepts like form, perspective and proportion as well as blending colours and making gradients.


Materials: Oil pastels, black project paper and a pencil and eraser.

Children of the World

VIEW PROJECT DETAILS

Khéraba Traoré is a socially engaged Senegalese artist who uses newsprint to explore the world of children, especially street children. Students will be able to create their own collage and drawing using recycled paper while exploring texture, balance, space, line and colour.

Material: A permanent marker, card stock paper, a glue stick, scissors, recycled newsprint and washable markers.

Bear Who Loves to Read

VIEW PROJECT DETAILS

With this story of avid readers and an unlikely friendship, students will learn advanced vocabulary words and their definitions. They will also explore texture, bas-relief and a sense of composition, while creating a portrait of friends of the forest and elements made of coloured foam paper.

Material : sand paper, chalk pastels, coloured foam paper, scissors and white glue.

The Lion

VIEW PROJECT DETAILS

Senegal is a country of beaches and deserts and is renowned throughout the African continent for its visual arts. Inspired by the Senegalese technique of sand painting, students will learn to draw their own fiery lion by making a gradient of colors and exploring form, texture, perspective and line.

Material: Sandpaper, oil pastels, paper towel.

Circular Motifs

VIEW PROJECT DETAILS

Students will create a colorful project inspired by the French couple, Robert and Sonia Delaunay, founders of Orphism, a cubist avant-garde movement. They will use a ruler to create geometric shapes and color them with oil pastels, hiding a secret shape in their work! They will explore line, shape, color and patterns.

Materials: A ruler, drawing paper, pencil and eraser and oil pastels.

Selfie: Modern Art

The surrealist world of Baya Mahieddine, a self-taught Algerian artist, is the source of inspiration for a fun watercolor project. Did you know that this artist inspired Picasso? Students will create a work of their self-portrait in a doodle art world by learning the elements of art such as form, line, patterns and emphasis in the works.

Materials: Watercolor paper, watercolor paint, permanent black marker, brush, water container and paper towel.

Dreaming of the Sky

VIEW PROJECT DETAILS

Students will create a landscape with two negative silhouettes using watercolor techniques in this project inspired by the surrealist René Magritte, an artist who liked to make his viewers think with provocative works. Students will learn the basics of watercolor painting as well as notions such as balance in art, negative space, silhouette and texture.


Materials: From paper to watercolor, from paint to watercolor, a brush, a container of water and paper towels and a pencil and eraser.

Cat in the Window

VIEW PROJECT DETAILS

Artists love cats! They are the subject of many famous artist's works, including Renoir, Picasso and Andy Warhol.
Using soft pastels and blending techniques, we will study how light can give shape and dimension to different objects. We will also learn techniques for drawing a cat. Supplies: Black Project Paper, Pencil and Eraser, Chalk Pastel Set, Rulers , Fixative spray (Optional)

Surrealism Stork

The surrealist world of the Algerian artist, Baya Mahieddine, is the source of inspiration for this watercolor project. Did you know that this artist inspired Picasso? Students will learn to draw a stork in a dreamlike world with bright colors! Students will explore 2 watercolor techniques while learning elements of art such as line, balance, patterns, color and shape. Let’s fly away!

Materials: Watercolour paper, watercolor paint, black permanent marker, brush, water container, paper towel.

Racoon in Paris Poster

VIEW PROJECT DETAILS

In this class we create imaginative posters inspired by Paris-born artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.
Students learn fun and expressive poster design techniques. Students can tweak the original design to create their own unique backgrounds. Let's learn about the history of Paris and the culture of it's past.
Supplies: Project Paper, Pencil and Eraser, Pencil Crayon Set, Black Permanent Marker, Red Marker, Ruler

Self Portrait: Interpretive Art

VIEW PROJECT DETAILS

Inspired by Paul Dieuseul, the Haitian artist who founded the artist collective Saint-Soleil, students will learn about naïve art by drawing their own simplified portraits with a beautiful colourful patterned background. Students will choose to draw self-portraits or portraits of people in their lives and, like Dieuseul, will be led by instinct to fill up their colourful backgrounds while exploring concepts of line, pattern, share and color.

Materials: A permanent marker, white cardstock paper, washable markers.

Watercolour Frog

VIEW PROJECT DETAILS

Students will explore two watercolour techniques through the creation of a beautiful project inspired by Claude Monet, a French impressionist painter. Students will learn to draw a frog sitting on a water lily by learning about perspective, texture and movement. Let’s hear the frog’s song!

Materials: Watercolor paper, watercolor paint, permanent black marker, brush, water container and paper towel.

Dice Monsters

VIEW PROJECT DETAILS

The funny characters of Élise Gravel, Quebec author and illustrator are the foundation for this wonderfully fun project using a dice to create silly creatures. Each child will create a unique work of art of a monster with a hilarious personality while also exploring art concepts of line, balance, shape and space.

Materials: A permanent marker, drawing paper, washable markers and a dice.

Watercolour Peacock on a Postcard

VIEW PROJECT DETAILS

Students will create a project with a character from Les Fables de La Fontaine. This short tale encourages us to appreciate our unique qualities, which is the basis for an exploration of two watercolour techniques. On a watercolour paper postcard, students will explore form, emphasis, proportion and colour by creating their own peacock.


Materials: Watercolour postcard, pencil and eraser, watercolour paint, paintbrush, water container, paper towel.
