Grade 2:

• People and Environments: Global Communities

  • Overall Expectations:

    • identify and locate various physical features and selected communities around the world, and describe some aspects of people’s ways of life in those communities

  • Specific Expectations:

    • The world is made up of many different regions, which have distinct characteristics .

  • Activity Idea:

    •  In this tutorial you used spices to create your artwork. This is based on sand artwork that is common in Senegal, which is a country in Africa. Different countries and people have different ways of life based on where they live.

    • Is this sand artwork really common in Canada? Why do you think it is, or is not common in Canada? What is one reason that you think it is common in Senegal?

    • What is one type of art you do with your family? Do you think it is something that people around the world do?

Grade 4:

• Understanding Life Systems - Habitats and Communities

  • Overall Expectations:

    • demonstrate an understanding of habitats and communities and the relationships among the plants and animals that live in them.

  • Specific Expectation:

    • demonstrate an understanding of habitats as areas that provide plants and animals with the necessities of life (e.g., food, water, air, space, and light)

  • Activity Idea:

    • Caro’s tutorial allowed you to explore artwork and animals that are common in Senegal. Research the climate in Senegal. What is the climate like? Write this down using a few sentences.

    • Now, choose your favourite animal and investigate the habitat that they live in. Answer the following questions about the climate:

      • What country (-ies) is the animal commonly found in?

      • Is the climate more similar to Senegal or Canada? Why?

    • Finally, write a short paragraph sharing what  you learned about your favourite animal and the climate that they live in. 

Grade 6:

• Understanding Life Systems

  • Overall Expectation:

    • investigate the characteristics of living things, and classify diverse organisms according to specific characteristics;

  • Specific Expectations:

    • investigate the organisms found in a specific habitat and classify them according to a classification system

    • use scientific inquiry/research skills (see page 15) to compare the characteristics of organisms within the plant or animal kingdoms (e.g., compare the characteristics of a fish and a mammal, of coniferous and deciduous trees, of ferns and flowering plants)

  • Activity Idea:

    • You created a piece of art of an animal that is commonly found in the warm climate of Senegal. Investigate the characteristics of this climate and choose another animal to research that lives in there.

    • Now compare Senegal's climate to Canada’s climate and explain why the animal you researched could not survive in Canada’s environment.
